I don’t understand exactly why she’s conflicted she knows that he was abused by the emperor his entire life and that his mom mind controlled him to listen to everything the emperor said up until he turned into an adult so Darcy quite literally had no choice but to kill the mages like none of this is his fault yet he bears all the guilt and all the blame

This plot is becoming more nonsensical as it goes on.
The mages were and are irrelevant to the “battle” for the throne. Darcy made it clear he has no opponent for that, he can control the emperor at will, so why are we being told there’s some dispute for it?
The empire apparently knew about this village, but left it alone because… plot wanted it? But now they’re killing them all because… plot wants it?
What was the point of putting easily spotted illusions in the village? It has literally done nothing.
The story is honestly losing all coherency.
