Maybe they’re just not used to the phrase? I’m Norwegian, and I turned in a creative writing project for English class, my teacher in that class later pulled me aside because she wasn’t sure a thing I’d written was an actual “thing” in English. The sentence went “First I’m going to beat them up, and then beat it myself (run away/get away).” She’d never heard of “beat it” as an expression apparently.
