Despite his difficult past and the suffering he endured, much of which was caused by her father, I think his love for her was genuine. However, their social standings were vastly different, leading him to feel inferior to her. It wasn’t until the fall of the monarchy that he began to see himself as her superior. Probably he just wanted her to depend solely on him and look only at him, though that doesn’t excuse his actions. Perhaps he feared losing her after what he did to her family and believed that, now that she is an orphan like him, she would cling to him, just as he once clung to her and her music to survive. He didn’t realize that, in doing so, he was breaking her. But I don’t understand why punishing her this way. Like he didn’t hate her before knowing who’s daughter she was.
