It was a chest that was about to open and release a plague. Something Mine only knew about thanks to her power, and the seal was seemingly about to open thanks to her getting close. The explosion happened because dark energy and divine energy collided and Exarch probably needed a bit to overcome the artefact, so the energies mixed and exploded, which destroyed the plague and the box in the process.
The crown prince didn’t even know it was an ominous object until someone else pointed it out and the one who did didn’t know about the plague either. Exarch didn’t even tell the prince what was bad about the box, only that it was malicious.

Please note, though they can threaten him with “how did you come to possess something so dangerous and what were your intentions”, they don’t actually have proof of it other than their testimonies. As stated, the Emperor likely wouldn’t even concern himself over the other 5 artifacts until one of them actually causes a nation wide disaster.
