It seems to me that the Empress’s family is involved with the cult. Since they gave up the Empress seat so easily it must mean that either they knew they could easily get it back via assassination or otherwise, or they never needed it. I’m betting on the latter.
Assuming they don’t need the royal seat must mean they were after royal blood. Shushu’s spirit power is constantly being stolen by the empress so it must be what is needed. Azuela is probably the ‘new god’ spoken from the cult mages. She might be artificially created and being sustained by shushu’s power.
That or she already had her own degree of it but since spirit power is incompatible with mana in a human body. She might just lack the required spirit power the Empress’s family needs to create a god.
I still feel like too much is missing or not adding up with my theory though.
