My guess is that those assassins who tried to kill the real princess had succeeded in killing her, but the Archmage’s soul drifted to that lifeless body. Hyperion’s bloodline is strong both in raw power and magic, also she’s the 3rd Star of the kingdom mentioned in the prophecy no less. That may have been the reason why the Archmage’s soul got pulled to the princess’ body
