This is sad, but maybe the mom had a really bad case of postpartum depression? Anyways, clearly the “job” she was doing was her being sent to some kind of mental institution to protect the kids.
The moms back looked injured? Perhaps it meant if she was around him he would be in danger, she was holding the baby in her arms rather than continuing to attack. It looked like they were both attacked and the mom took almost every shard to the back?
