The question is WHO he was saying it to, if he was saying it to Chen then it might be because he’s threatened by her (usually people use such language when they feel lacking in comparison and it makes them feel better). I don’t think he was saying it to Emi, since he seems to be obsessed with her, but then again she used to be a doll of sorts and so he was probably expecting her to be as useless as she had been. Now, what if he wasn’t saying it to them but someone they didn’t notice? Maybe the “useless piece of trash” is a third party unrelated to the two girls, but was supposed to use the ensuing chaos to nab Emi, unsuccessfully I should add. If memory serves correctly, Dian was the main reason Emi and Penny got trapped by the Kapir (he’s the reason they met by abandoning Emi). I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s one of the Dark Murat mages that attacked Emi, since he’s the only setting up the dominos to fall in place.
