ok I was confused but I think the family is trying to have more power in the imperial family by shipping the illegitimate son and the princess. edan is trying his best so he can escape his family situation. I feel like the duke miscalculated a bit tho. If a DUKES son marries the only other heir to the throne he may be seen as undermining rey’s claim to the throne (emperor would not be happy) because obviously you would support your child’s spouse??? maybe its different since he is the illegitimate son and she is a powerless princess but idk. If it was his legitimate son he could seem like he was aiming for the throne himself. (is he a foreign duke orrrrr…..?)
either way it is obvious he was calculating (out of self preservation) from the start.
