The pope is clearly using and manipulating her. The pope intervened with the prophecy and flipped her life inside out. It;s so damn obvious why would you want a trashy guy like that as the ML.

He was not the pope when the first Oracle was issued. He just got to know about it and if my guess is correct the present pope i.e. the male lead changed it to free her from that position I guess, since it’s clearly mentioned here that the previous pope and the emperor joined hands to create one it’s probably because they needed the Duke’s powers to strengthen his next generation
