Calling her behavior childish isn’t exactly fair. Their relationship is essentially the same as 2 people who just started dating. They’re a little flirty, but neither of them has explicitly stated that they have true affection for the other, much less that they MIGHT love each other. So if he doesn’t tell her outright that he’s trying to protect her, and if she doesn’t outright explain why she’s afraid for him, they don’t have a strong basis of trust to work off of. So they have misunderstandings like this. Both of these 2 also seem to have self-esteem issues.
