They kind of explained it a few chapters ago that he sent her away to keep her safe so she wouldn’t get caught up in his fight for succession. His brother gave up his right to succession and went with Leah to keep her safe so that cleared that up but it seems like he was facing not just internal issues but external issues as well. The property was in ruins, his status in society was shaky, and he still had enemies that likely would have used Leah against him since she’s precious to him. He thought she was still safe and doing well because the letters they exchanged but he didn’t know that his letters weren’t reaching her and the letters he received in response were fake. Still seems like it would have been better to just keep her by his side to protect her himself but with their difference in status I think that would have only made matters harder so perhaps that’s why.
