So, we are in the middle of the Empress’ memory of why the Emperor hates the East so much. From what was said in previous chapters, it appears that Miles Talessdo was Calix’s grandfather? Calix’s father made it clear during the story arc in which Belladonna was exposed and expelled, that Calix’s father did not inherit the same passion for the East as his own father (meaning Miles). This led to Calix’s father abandoning his political marriage and letting his son (Calix) take on the title and responsibilities of Duke at a young age.
I believe that we had a brief image of Miles (and how much Calix looks like his grandfather) before in the recollections of Calix’s retainer (during the trip when Amber went to meet with her father). By retainer, I mean the much older man living alone (surrounded by what remains of his people) in the region most damaged by the poison, the individual who had been abandoned by his family.
