in korean the phrase like a dead rat is closer in meaning to living like a mouse in english. which isn’t really hateful towards her just neglectful. He seems capable of redemption though, but I’m glad she escaped anyways, and I hope she doesn’t go back.

just think about it from the point of view of some strategic in the story: the king can’t assume elincia is his daughter right away: someone might deceived philomel about her being fake and tried to replace her with some other girl to get closer to the throne and then delete the king himself… if this was elincia’s mother plan and that book was all her writing or even the grand magician then it all makes sense
