nah bro ur misunderstanding the dynamics of polygamous marriages during antiquity. i can only speak well on central european customs but concubine marriages primarily functioned as a way for smaller lords to form relationships with more powerful lords. women were not treated as people, rather, objects symbolic of an alliance between two states. “i give u my daughter so u give me military aid.” however, this began to shift around the eleventh century when the concept of courtly love was established. plus, the increased influence of the catholic church, supreme purveyors of monogamy, really made polygamous marriage unacceptable. ofc, the catholic church also prohibited incest although dispensations were often granted for nobles powerful enough to resist the churchs influence.
anyway its not the emperors fault he has a bunch of concubines; theyre merely symbols of commitment in an alliance. he likely had little choice in the matter of his wives, and was at the very least under heavy duress to marry to form political alliances as was his duty as emperor. some political systems actually mandated emperors take a wife from each large vassal / clan under him as a sign on unity!
