I see it so often in stories like these and I wonder if people genuinely act like that. “so when are we getting married” after being asked for an annulment. Like is this the “if you pretend not to like them, they’ll want you” saying cause in actuality to think about that’s bizarre asf and I’ve never seen it irl. You don’t like her, why try to keep her? Ughhh!!

There’s a bit of truth to it. It is hard to love what you don’t respect, and people don’t respect doormats or dogs. Slavishly doing everything for another person will just make them take you for granted as a slave. Telling them no, making them exert effort, making them aware that they are about to lose it all, etc. will instead make them respect you and try harder.
