How have y’all not picked up on the fact he strongly resents bullies? it makes perfect sense! He’s got some deeper backstory than we know, they’ve already hinted at it! He was bullied but just when it got to the boiling point, they vanished without a trace. And that was initially what drew him to her- seeing how bravely and fearlessly she faced them and didn’t put up with it for one second. That’s when he jumped to be her friend. He’s clearly got something more there than we know yet.
