…. could it be he’s actually Rachel’s father and Vivian is adopted? …. he’d probably wanna see Rachel though if that was the case. And his eyes are the wrong colour. So maybe related to some knight or other? Or a string mage?

I disagree with that first part, I think he was a friend of Rachel’s father somehow and that “died” in battle after what happened to his friend… Or maybe there’s another reason why he faked his death, like beliving the emperor would also try to frame him for treason or something else.
Anyway, definitely a knight based on the dukes foreshadowing
