I don’t know if the story is supposed to be a slow burn or if it’s just so messy that, at some point, it becomes frustrating to comprehend. First of all, if she had simply given the shard of the mirror to Winter after the island incident, a lot of scenes could’ve been prevented since the system never even said anything about hiding it.
Not only that, after she decided to kill herself by poisoning, her relationship with Eckles became even worse. Yes, it’s understandable that Eckles betrayed her, but at the same time, he knew absolutely nothing about her real goal because she never opened up to him in the first place. As Eckles himself said, she never trusted him enough to tell him anything, so he acted on his own accord, believing it was the best thing for her.
Honestly, if I were in his shoes, I would probably do the same. Imagine seeing the person you love desperately trying to survive, gaining everyone’s attention and affection, while also constantly acting like she wanted to run away from everything. Technically, it felt like she was giving him hints, only to later turn around and act like the victim.
She could’ve at least apologized properly instead of acting so cold and rude, especially considering she was the one who pushed that already broken man even deeper into despair. Her desperation and actions played a huge role in what Eckles became, so it’s frustrating to see her avoid accountability while saying things like, “I will never love you nor be with you no matter what.”
I understand that she’s trying to survive the game, but treating someone like they’re disposable trash isn’t helping at all. She knew Eckles loved her to the point that he would destroy everything just to make her happy or at least what he believed would make her happy.
What’s even more frustrating is how she constantly acts like the victim in front of Eckles when, at this point, she’s no longer the original Penelope. Whatever happened in the past is no longer entirely relevant because the current Penelope is also responsible for the person Eckles has become now. This is just my opinion. Hahaha
