nooooo… I seriously love the art, but it skipped over the reasoning, again. Firstly, empress dowager was upset that they didn’t go to visit her for a long time after that incident with Yvette (the brunette princess) – she waited for days turned weeks for Aris to visit again, but felt used when Aris hadn’t shown up.
Empress Dowager charges over to Aris’s palace to demand an explanation, but learns that Aris has been poisoned – the trauma mentioned was glossed over so easily. She, who has already associated Aris with her dead daughter, sees her dead daughter once more, as well as being guilted by the death of her own daughter who died because of Empress Dowager’s neglect. The cause of poisoning – a gift – also runs similar to her daughter’s cause, as she had consumed a poisoned gift in place of the current emperor.
This trauma is what drives her to strive for a “second chance” to right the wrong, to redeem herself in a way, by taking better care of her “daughter” this time. Although it was a minor complication, and the Empress Dowager knows that it is not life threatening to Aris, she won’t risk even the slightest chance of a second death of her “daughter”.
I.e. the reason she’s so tolerant of Aris’ childish behaviour, and why she’s so insistent on sending healthy foods. Again, I love the art but the pacing is a little too fast, it doesn’t do justice to the meanings of the characters actions. I actually like the fact that our FL isnt at all an innocent, helpless person but instead someone strong, smart, and cunning from using her experiences as a child in order for Aris not to suffer the same way. It’s cruel, but that’s how you really need to survive in the Imperial Palace.
