Exactly there was no way for the church to win in this situation. The situation only had two outcomes, for her not to be burned by the wood not lighting (which makes her pretty much insular against anything the church can charge her with as she is now a child loved by God), or if she did die, which would have become such a huge scandalous situation that it would undermine the church completely in the entire empire forever.
