Part of the chapter is missing but I found it elsewhere. So
– after Camilla gave him the watering can with her comment and left with Asrian, Pietro doubled over laughing while holding onto that can, wondering what was going on.
– He thinks about how he wanted to join those two who lived freely.
– then back to his perspective as Camilla told him not to bother with a fake smile just to prove being kind.
– He thinks about how it was almost like she almost saw some inner part of him he hadn’t even known about, then he seems to contemplate whether he should try her suggestion.
– two ladies approach him to invite him for refreshments only to freeze when they see his face (we only get to see a side-profile).
– he isn’t sure what expression they’re seeing, only that it isn’t a smile. And maybe that face they’re seeing is his true/honest face.
– next panel shows him smiling as he accepts their offer. As they walk away he remembers his mother telling him to be good person.
– “No matter what I just heard, I’m not going to change. I followed the girls and smiled even more brightly.”
That’s where the chapter ends.
Someone commented on it already but I think it’s possible he’s got some emotional disconnect so he merely pretends/plays along in a way that he has been told will show him as a good person. And like he said himself, no one is getting hurt when he is being kind to them. The danger comes when it’s people like those thugs, because to Mr Red, as long as he’s helping others (regardless of how that looks) he is being a good/kind person, like his mother wanted
