I absolutely hate these people, they’ve completely bastardized this whole competition. The competition was originally to be able to discern if the emperor could identify his love because she didn’t trust human love. The whole process of allowing humans to kill each other to eliminate them only further proves that humans are incapable of discerning their love without extreme measures. Basically this whole thing spits in the face of the whole challenge also.

I’m actually of the belief that our FL is actually the empress but that she executed magic to make her forget who she is, but the fact that she sees this as despicable will eventually matter (actually it won’t matter because the way these stories usually work is that fl completely ignore logic)
