I have a suspicion that she is the former dukes child and because she was a threat to the current fake duke he had her mother become his lover and say that she was his instead. so that she wasn’t ahead of him in the line of succession. He was probably behind his brothers death too.

Her mom might have been preggers by the previous duke.. thats whats being somewhat implied by this (the elders finding her interesting or something) They’re still related but as cousins in that case instead of half siblings.
